INTERNSHIP IN FAULT SEAL ASSESSMENT FOR HYDROGEN ACCUMULATIONS
Le poste
As a leading consulting firm in geoscience and engineering challenges, supported by the research and innovation of the IFPEN Group, Beicip-Franlab continues to strengthen its expertise in emerging subsurface energy resources.
In this context, Beicip-Franlab offers an internship dedicated to investigating innovative workflows to fault sealing requirements for hydrogen accumulations, with a primary focus on natural hydrogen and relevance to underground hydrogen storage.
Natural hydrogen is emerging as a new exploration frontier, while underground hydrogen storage is attracting increasing industrial interest. In both applications, the ability of geological seals and fault rocks to limit hydrogen leakage is critical for long-term retention and storage integrity.
The internship aims 1) to assess the business case of how established hydrocarbon fault-seal concepts can be adapted to hydrogen systems and 2) to identify the fault-rock properties and geological settings most favorable for long-term hydrogen retention.
· Review natural hydrogen systems and underground hydrogen storage studies.
· Review conventional fault-seal methodologies, including shale gouge ratio (SGR), fault-rock permeability and capillary seal concepts.
· Compile representative ranges of fault-rock properties relevant to hydrogen retention.
· Develop simplified hydrogen-retention models based on established gas-seal concepts.
· Perform sensitivity analyses on fault-rock permeability, fault-rock thickness and hydrogen-specific transport properties.
· Relate modelling results to geological fault properties such as SGR, clay content and fault-rock thickness.
· Explore the relationship(s) between applied business cases and subsurface properties
· Evaluate whether conventional hydrocarbon fault-seal concepts can be transferred to hydrogen systems.
· Document and communicate results through technical reports, slides and presentations.
Python and standard office software for data analysis, sensitivity modelling, reporting and presentation preparation.
